Lessons from Yesterday (SANKOFA)

Sankofa is a concept from the Akan people of Ghana, symbolized by a bird flying forward while looking backward with an egg in its mouth. The term comes from the Akan words “san” (return), “ko” (go), and “fa” (fetch), meaning “go back and fetch it.”

Sankofa represents the importance of reflecting on the past to build a better future. It emphasizes learning from history, reclaiming heritage, and using the wisdom of ancestors to guide progress. This concept is often associated with preserving cultural traditions, honoring roots, and fostering personal and collective growth.

It’s important that we learn from our past. That’s why it’s important to record our accomplishments from previous years. We must document our learned best practices and use them to propel us into the future.
